Outdoor
Emergency Care: Comprehensive Care for Nonurban
Settings by Warren D. Bowman M.D.. This is the text book required by the
National Ski Patrol. Therefore, it has a particular emphasis on
splinting and cold weather emergencies. But, it is also one if not
the best "text books" written for the field of wilderness medicine. It is the only book that comes close to Wilderness
Medicine. It also has the advantage of being written more
for the lay public.

Wilderness
Medicine: Management of Wilderness and
Environmental Emergencies by Paul Auerbach. This text is the
"bible" of Wilderness Medicine. If you are truly serious
about the topic you must find a way to purchase this text. If you
only get one text book, this should be it. However, don't even think
about bringing it out into the field (look at the page count). Some
medical background is also required to understand all the text. It
simply covers everything with "the" expert in each field
covering each particular topic.

Medicine
for Mountaineering & Other Wilderness Activities by
James Wilkerson. Beyond first aid, this is the medical bibles for
backcountry adventurers. Written by a team of climber/physicians and
considered the authoritative reference on backcountry medicine. Any trip
into remote territory calls for earnest planning and foresight, including
preparing for the possibility of illness or injury. A basic knowledge of
first aid can help; but how would you treat an appendicitis attack high on
a foreign mountain? What if one of your companions had a stroke, or
contracted hepatitis on a boat in mid-ocean? Medicine for Mountaineering
picks up where first aid manuals leave off. Written by a team of
climber-physicians, this fully updated edition of a classic provides
expert information as well as procedures on major and minor medical
emergencies. Areas covered include: Diagnosis, psychology of accidents,
preventive measures. Traumatic injuries--fractures, burns, soft tissue
injuries--heat, cold, altitude. Diseases, pain, infections, allergies.
Medications, medical kits, legal considerations. Authoritative and
comprehensive, Medicine for Mountaineering should be on the equipment list
of any hiker, climber, boater, and outdoor user who ventures more than
24 hours beyond medical attention.

The
Outward Bound Wilderness First-Aid Handbook by
Jeff Isaac, et al. Another venerable outdoor organization produces a
quality book. Rather than catalog every possible injury that can
occur in the wilderness, Isaac gives an overview of how the human body
functions in both health and in injury, and demonstrates how this
knowledge can be applied to a wide variety of medical problems. While some
of the material will be familiar to those who've taken a basic first-aid
course, the Handbook excels in its approach to maladies more
particular to the wilderness, like dislocations, burns and blisters, and,
perhaps most insidious, hypothermia. Also included in Isaac's book are
shorter sections on avalanches, lightning, altitude sickness, and near
drowning.
